Health provider (BLS)

 

Basic Life-Saving Skills (BLS) for Health provider's

This course is designed for people working in the medical field with a responsibility to respond to an emergent situation.  Students must pass both a written and skills test before successfully completing the course and receiving a course card.

Course Outline:

  • CPR basics for adults, children, and infants
  • CPR for 1 and 2 rescuers for adults, children, and infants
  • Airway & Breathing - practice using a pocket mask, bag mask (Ambu-bag), and advanced airway breathing
  • AED usage (automated external defibrillator)

Testing:

All students must take a written exam and receive an 80 or above to pass.  Students must also demonstrate their skills for adult/child CPR, AED usage, and infant CPR as their skills test.  Remediation will be offered and retesting to follow.   If you would like more information, or to study, go to the American Heart Association's website and research the 2005 CPR & ECC Guidelines for Health providers.

Course Completion Card:

Upon successful completion of course students will receive a course card good for 2 years, some employers require annual re-certification.  In order to qualify for the renewal course you must show proof of current course cards.  Students without a current card or with an expired card are required to take the New Health provider course.  Students that are re-certifying and have a current course card that is not expired by even one day may take the Health provider - renewal course.

Renewal Course: 

Students wishing to renew a current Health provider (BLS) card may choose an renewal course.  Renewals have the choice of how much refresher and practice they need.  Students must pass written exam and all skills testing; see above Course Completion Card for more information.

Online Courses:

Online courses are available through the American Heart Association's website at www.heart.org.  Upon successful completion of online course students must then attend a testing session with an instructor to demonstrate their competence in skills training and a written exam.  Students will be given time to practice with a manikin prior to skills testing.  Students are required to provide instructors with the printed certificate after successfully completing the online course to advance to testing and receive course card.
