Bloodborne Pathogens Standard: Part # 1910 Subpart: Z Standard Number: 1910.1030 Title: Bloodborne Pathogens
Training Requirements: OSHA states that employers are responsible for ensuring every employee with an occupational exposure to bloodborne disease participate in a training program given during work hours at no cost to the employee. Employers must provide annual training covering the dangers of bloodborne pathogens, safety and prevention practices, and post-exposure procedures. All employee's that have a reasonable anticipation of contact with blood or OPIM (Other Potentially Infectious Material) related to their job duties, and responsibilities, is covered by this standard.
Some Jobs that can anticipate contact with blood or OPIM, but not limited to, are:
- Employee's designated to provide first aid
- Doctors, nurses, medical assistants, physicians assistants, lab technicians
- Dentist, dental assistance, hygienist, and lab technicians
- Paramedics, EMT's, MERT
- Urgent Care clinics
- Home healthcare employee's
- Hospice employee's
- Nursing home and long term care staff
- Housekeepers in healthcare and other facilities
- Custodial workers required to clean up devices or anything covered with blood or OPIM
- Firefighters, police, correctional officers
- Maintenance workers
- Employee's of funeral homes and mortuaries
- Employee's of institutions for the developmentally disabled
- Bloodbanks employee's
- Clinical and diagnostic facilities
- Employee's handling regulated waste
- Employee's providing medical equipment service and repair

- Bloodborne Pathogens (BBP) and OPIM
- Hepatitis B Virus and Vaccine Requirements
- Hepatitis C
- HIV/AIDS
- Bloodborne Pathogens & First Aid
- Bloodborne Pathogens & Needle sticks
- Exposure Control Plan
- Engineering and Work Practice Controls
- Universal Precautions and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- Hand-washing, cleaning up blood & OPIM, removal of contaminated gloves & PPE
- Exposure Incident First Aid
- Post-exposure evaluation and follow up
- Evaluating the circumstances surrounding an exposure incident
Bloodborne Pathogen training can be added to any class. Any employee expected to be certified in First Aid and respond at work should also take the Bloodborne Pathogen Course. A new course will take approx. 2 hours. The annual re-certification class will take approx. 1 hour. Students will receive the American Health & Safety Institute's Bloodborne Pathogens Student handbook and course card good for 1 year.
